Well, if you aren't dyslexic, I suggest paying attention. Your English skills matter a LOT later on in life, people judge you by them, and question your intelligence if you can't type/speak/write very well. In fact, I'd say English is way, WAY more important than math or history.

I think ADD is definitely a unfortunate problem for some, but also a way to wiggle around work for others. I feel that doctors over-diagnose it, probably because it is so hard to diagnose.

Like in English all I do is sit and pic the latex like paint off the school desk, I would do that all day if I could and my freind would sit there and watch me do it all day if he could

I get 80's for english anyway, no big deal. We have a really dumb teacher.

lol we have "red ribbon week" at school you get these red ribbons. I actually picked all of the strands that were running sideways of of it so it was frayed. during english.

What weird about add is i had a friend in kindergarded with adhd. He was hyper really annoying and all. now he's not bad never goes crazy it's just weird how you have it and can loose it.

You don't lose it. You learn to manage it through conscious behavior or environment modification (could include medication) or you were misdiagnosed.

ADD/ADHD is heavily overdiagnosed, often by untrained individuals such as school nurses, and worse, school teachers. A teacher will comment that the kid is hyper and inattentive (the latter often the direct result of the former), and insist that the kid be medicated. I've heard of threats from the school to parents that the kid would be expelled unless the parents had the child placed on medication.

Not only does this overdiagnosis have potentially harmful consequenses for the children, but it cheapens an actual diagnosis. Some kids are just hyper. Some are just undisciplined or apathetic. Some have other learning disabilities, that out of frustration, manifest themselves as disruptive behavior. Often, these kids are forcibly drugged via threat of expulsion. Other times, the parents take the easy road of medication rather than discipline or proper treatment.

It seems that the education system in the US has largely assumed the role of parent, and is doing a lousy job. We're lowering the bar, so that the less intelligent and less motivated can pass, in the name of "No child left behind". We're removing competitive sports and passing laws against name-calling in the name of "boosting self-esteem". We're expelling kids for minor transgressions such as carrying a camp-style can opener on a keychain in the name of "Zero tolerance". We're forcing medication on kids who become mildly disruptive, rather than enforcing proper discipline on the delinquents and providing challenging material to the gifted.

If you ask me (You haven't, but I'll say it anyway), the solution is to start holding parents accountable for the behavior of their children until the children become adults, and to allow parents to discipline their children again. Parents should not have to fear a visit from child protection services when they ground their teenager. If a kid is disruptive, the action by the school should be a meeting with the parents, to send the message "Deal with it". Make the parents be the parents again.

I couold continue about problems with this approach, such as the increased cost of living requiring that both parents have full time jobs just to keep a roof over their heads, but that's a topic for another thread, and I've rambled on long enough already.

There you go Freefall, I agree. Parents need to stop pushing the responsibility of discipline and teaching kids to become responsible adults off on the schools. More and more they expect schools to teach kids not just about career-oriented subjects, but sex-ed, marital relationships, parenting. That's the parents' job. Teachers were underpaid enough before you started shoving all that crap on them, now it's ridiculous.

I read about a kid who was sent to juvy because he forgot to take his knife out of his boyscout jacket. A kid saw him put it in his locker and told on him.

Theres a kid in our school who intentionaly brings lighters. Thats more of the thing you need to expel for.

See, my school would make exceptions... Sometimes. There were these two guys both named Cody who had a hunting show on a local station called, you guessed it, Cody & Cody. Well they had filmed an episode one weekend and one forgot to take a shotgun and box of shells out of the back of his truck. They let him off. Honestly, that was a bit extreme to just let him off, I mean it was jsut laying in the back of his truck. But it was good to se them actually thinking something through.
