here's a idea-a spring loaded rotorary valve, say your chamber is 4" dia. and your barrel is 2" dia. have the barrel through to the end with a quick disconnect end cap, for fast access to wind spring, drill 2 holes in the barrel near the front of chamber 1/2" holes ajacent to each other, have another piece of pipe to fit in the barrel with 2 holes drilled in it to make the valve, somehow hook a spring to the valve, build the release into the trigger, when you pull the trigger it releases the valve to turn and let the air out, HERES WERE YOU GUYS COME IN-DE BUG IT- i'm adding rough drawing the text mite be hard to see copy then zoom in, i think after seeing this you will grasp my concept, let me know what you think

...this is essentialy a ball valve.
It's going to be much easier to just buy a normal ball valve and glue a torsion spring to it. (this is the type of spring you'll find in, say, a hand-exercise squeeze ball)

for the spring action i was thinking twist coil like on old lawnmowers you turn the handle untill the spring is tight, then flip the switch that releases the spring and turns/spins the inner tubeing/ported valve to line the holes up and let the air through the barrel, all parts are inside the barrel, know what i'm getten at ? this valve can be really really fast opening, i got the idea from a locksmith tool i have, called a plug spinner-short version : if you pick a lock and turn the lock plug to the lock posision instead of unlock you wind up the spinner and stick it in the lock plug, release the spring, it turns the plug fast enough to bypass 5 sometimes 6 tumblers all indaviguly spring loaded, beleave me it's faster then the eye can see !! isn't rule of thump the faster you open the valve the better the launch ?
Speed depends on friction. The reason it's so fast on a lock is because there is little friction. A ball valve has a lot more friction than a lock. I've been working on a similiar design but it's near impossible to line up the holes without air leaks between rods.

None the less... why would this be any better than a torsion spring and a ball valve? I would think it'd be much easier to make and service it if you could use a pre-made ball valve and have all your parts outside of the pressure envelope.
