I find that when people start taking the piss out of your spudguns, you should blow the largest hole possible through the toughest thing available.

Big holes in plate steel tend to make most people shut up, then watch in hushed awe...
Novacastrian: How about use whatever the heck you can get your hands on?
frankrede: Well then I guess it won't matter when you decide to drink bleach because your out of kool-aid.
...I'm sorry, but that made my year.

I try not to talk about spud guns unless somebody brings it up or asks me about my hobbies. I always sigh in my mind when somebody asks how they work because I know they won't understand without some kind of visual aid and I'll just sound like a babbling idiot trying to explain it. When I'm expecting to talk about it I usually bring one of my minipumps in my pocket as a small demonstration.

As joanna mentioned the easiest way to explain what/why you build is to shoot something. One of my favorite spud gunning moments is when I just built my second gun, a large coaxial golf ball cannon, and my friend's girlfriend came over with him. She was yakking something about not understanding why guys like these sort of things as I was filling the gun up for a dry fire demonstration. She was still talking as I dry fired the gun and it gave a thunderous boom and knocked the whole gun back a bit on the stand. She just stopped and said "Oh" as she instantly understood with no words needed.

Clide your not the only one.I built a simple combustion for science class a while back(4 yrs ago). The kids in the class were all talking about how weak a spudgun is.Well I fixed them I launched a water balloon straight up.when it reached its peak you couldn't see the bright orange balloon,it then proceeded to land 300 ft. away.End of discussion(gaping jaws),I got an A+.
I also did this demonstration with my pneumatic and a nerf football. I lost that nerf  All the more with the awe from the onlookers.
