O-Rings

I've read that a lathe is required to mount O-Rings for most applications. I've also read that if an O-Ring is mounted in this way, that it can seal thousands of pounds of pressure. I only need O-Rings to seal about 100 pounds of pressure, but I still want them seated in a groove. Since I have no access to a lathe whatsoever, will an improvised groove work if I am precise about it? Also, where would be the best place to get O-Rings, as I've never seen them before? If anyone can give me a link to more information as well, it'd be appreciated! Thanks!

You can get orings off of www.mcmaster.com I ordered 20 ft of oring cord stock so i could make custom rings to any size i need. this action is highly recomended.

if you thinking you need o rings for a piston, you dont. ive made all my pistons without o rings and its works fine.

i have seen people make o ring grooves with a dremal, it works fine, but again, unnecessary.

now if you need it for something else, ignore me, as i know nothing.

ps- you can get o rings at the hardware store and some plummings shops/irrigation shops.

Trust me, I need O-Rings. This is an unusual application, piston-wise.

I have a case that has Several o-rings ranging from a few millimeters in diameter to over 2" in diameter.

Check your local harbor freight maybe?
