I don´t know if the Admins will support my idea... But here´s the deal:
I´m an IRC addict, using irc since 1999, started as normal user at MSN IRCx Network; Local Operator at ViaIRC (Brazilian Network); Global Operator at ViaIRC and finally Co-admin at ViaIRC. The network is currently down since 2005. So, I moved to Rizon network, currently as normal user, an unofficial helper and operator in a lot of channels.

Here the stats for Rizon Network:
There are 21 users and 14406 invisible on 1 servers
79 IRC Operators online
5349 channels formed
Current global users: 14427 Max: 16968

The stats show 1 servers, but there´s 27 linked servers.

The network provides Customizable vhosts, security bot... and a nice Help Staff

ASAP I will make an "instructable" to explain how to use IRC, mIRC (the irc client), basic and advanced commands...

The pros using the IRC Channel are:
Channel can be bigger as 100+ users, or smaller as 0 user.
Provides fast replys, and some fun...
news, messages, replys, questions... whatever... faster. ;)
File transfer... like p2p.
Deliver "memos". To offline users.

Cons: Need some help, to use... Not easy like, forum or webchat... But in this I can help ;)

So... if you can:
#SpudFiles @ Irc.Rizon.Net

Ah... the network has a Java based client
www.rizon.net

* basic initial commands:

/join #Channel - Obviously... to join.
/quit - No comments
/nickserv register VALID EMAIL PASSWORD - To register your nickname
/nickserv help - Help about nick
/chanserv help - Help about channels

You see...I don't like the idea of someone hacking into my computer through IRC Chat, which has happened before to many, many people in the past. There was even a report on the news about it, so no thankyou..I'll skip it.

This is something you should take up with PCGUY. There is a "FlashChat" facility already built-in to Spudfiles. I've never used it personally, I doubt that it is used much at all....I don't hear others talking about it much.

@MaxuS the 2nd... I use IRC since 1999, and I can say: I never been hacked... If you were hacked, maybe you accepted a file transfer, and this file contained some backdoor or something like or you typed a command that allows external connections... Even in Messenger, AIM or whatever things like this can happen... Just use SSL connection, accept files that you know the procedence, dont type commands like: /run and... be happy. Unfortunately you have this mentality about IRC.
Sure, I agree, theres a version of mIRC, in the past, that allows some buffer overflow attacks... But, it happens like 1 or 2 years ago...

If you dont feel secure using mIRC, go Xchat for Windows, TurboIRC... and others.

mIRC, that's the one I used to have, I was under the impression that all IRC was the same?

Not personally, I've never been hacked.

mIRC is the client that connects you to the server...
IRC is the "language" (?) Internet Relay Chat.

So you have many alternatives to mIRC, if you feel insecure...
But... personally, IRC is most secure than other Messaging Services ;)
Obviously, If you accept files, or type commands that you dont know how works maybe you got hacked... Not just on IRC Networks... but everywhere, every program... Even If I tell you make a *.bat and you don´t know how it will work, and you don´t know what I´m telling... I probally format your HD -

So, the basic rule is: Just accept files, and type commands from users that you trust
And enjoy ;)

About the channel, I will work on, write some tutorials... maybe, on Friday, the channel will be open for users.

Yeah, I´m not into the Channel right now... Working ;)
IRC just at home... Until I can bypass this f***ing firewall >.>

Yeah seeing as you are new to the site you might have to confront the mods about this, and more importantly PCGUY. Cool idea though.

I really have no idea about this IRC stuff, so I can't really comment. But is it just a chat messenger like the one build in to Spudfiles or MSN/AIM?

Chat? I thought IRC was just a way to get Warez! :P

We do have a chatroom built into the site though.

Me like. Took it for a spin and it is quite responsive. SpudFiles flash based chat can be quite laggy at times.

But... I think we have all learned our lesson. In-browser based chat clients are laggy. Why not just use a IM client like AIM or MSNM?

All of this talk about chatting has me kind of interested in reviving the weekly chat... Just sucks when you get 10+ people in there and it'll take 5 seconds or so for your responce to make it through. Kinda like chatting on a fast loading forum.

Or if like our old chat nights, the discussion degrades into random posts.
Stupid quote of the now:
joestue "The chamber is rated to 100 psi, it don't say that on the side, but the 2 inch stuff is rated to 300, so by analogy..."
"only the last two feet hear the end is black cellular core"
"I'm taking it to 300 psi"

@MrCrowley - No... If you wanna read on Wikipedia theres a huge information about IRC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat www.irchelp.org
IRC is like "normal" webchat, but dont necessary uses the internet browser, it´s requires a "client" (like mIRC, pIRCH, TurboIRC) to use the full resources of it... Better than "normal" webchat coz, there are Status Levels (Admin, Operator, Half-operator) to maintain the order into the room...

@TurboSuper No... The main purpose for IRC is chatting... Yes, theres a lot of channels to share programs, anime, videos, etc.

There´s almost no Lag on IRC...

IRC wins against IM, I dont wanna to add you all into my contacts list... And I really don´t wanna be invited into a "mass" conversation window, with 15 users, everyone using color letters... Arght >.>"

On IRC you have a lot of services, there´s rules, there´s Operators to keep the rules... If you need a fast help reply, just ask, and everyone in the channel will read your message, leave a memo, set the topic on the channel, etc... On IM, you ask one by one...

Yeah... I need to write a tutorial explaining the pros, the cons, how to use, how to install... Maybe on monday... Everything sets-up... MAYBE ;)
Weekend, university tests... >.<

Any question/suggestion
