i just started to work on my darts for the 1" steel plate and thought: "hmm i am pretty bored, mabe i can play abit with my huge drill press" so i did and was thinking i could make a notch on the back of the penetrator to catch it in the plate to look on the damage to the point of it and decide if i made it hard enough for future thicker plates.
so i made a 3mm deep notch and it was pretty fun so i started to make it look pretty and you can look on the pic and tell me if i did it well.
so i used was a 1cm thick steel bar, a flat file, a triangle shaped file, a 1600rpm drill press, a hacksaw and some sand paper for the looks.
i started of with the hacksaw, just pressed it against the steel and it cut itself in there. then i used a file of choice to make it look better and finally sandpaper to make it shiny.
enough talk!
APFSDS rounds
Not too close
I did an extreme point blank shot against some steel coins backed by a chunk of wood.
The plastic slug acting as the bore filler for the penetrator wasn't entirely clear of the barrel when the tip made contact so it expanded IN the barrel tip and flared it out slightly

Drill presses are amazing things. If you know what you're doing, you can make a $40 drill press work as a mill, lathe, anything you want. I'm getting a new vise to put on mine that will make it able to work as a vertical mill. Will be very useful.
Completed projects:
CA1 SMSS Basic Inline
CA3 PDAB Airburst Cannon
Current Project: Bolt action rifle (25x140mm + 1in shot)

You can tell how awesome a cannon is by the pressure used.

I don't get it but anyway. won't the welded on fins not allow the dart to penetrate?

if it make it all the way to the fins is would have penetrated, and i rapibly cooled it after the welding so it is brittle.
i may machine a deep groove in front of the fins so it will snap.
