Idea Contest

You know, I was thinking. This is a neat hobby, but it seems to be repetitive. I mean, we've got certain ways of doing things and it doesn't seem like it's gonna change. For example, there are a lot of great pneumatics here, but all of them have a valve and a type we've already seen. The same goes for combustions, hybrids, and BBMGs. A lot of great configurations, but all are, essentially,nothing new.

Don't get me wrong. Every now and again, someone will post a new idea that works, but we look at it, awe at it, then forget about it.

And that is the basis for this post. I was thinking a new contest for an original (working) idea was in order. It would be sort of like the contest that has been posted on this site's home page for a year. In this, however, it's not necessarily about a launcher, but more about ideas.

I think it's time to see something different.

If approved, I'll post my thoughts on rules and such.

I wasn't too sure if this was the right place to post this, if not, please move it.

I like the idea. There is [supposedly] a real gun contest waiting in the wings...it's in PCGUY's court at the moment. Something like this could either conflict with that, or be made a part of it...encourage new concepts, etc. sort of like last years was based on "new design and ingenuity".

Or if rather than a contest, you simply make this a dumping ground for wild hair ideas. The problem would be motivation though. I have some really different and frankly really cool ideas, I'm just not sure I want to dump them out there yet for public consumption without following through with a practical build. The idea isn't yours anymore.

That would work. If it conflicts, it may be a problem. What I was thinking was, instead of just posting an idea, you actually make it work and show pics / vids of the idea working.

So what you mean by this is to construct NEW working prototypes of guns. The reason so many people can stick to the same ideas, in my opinion, is because the person building hasnt made all of the various types. I've caught the spud bug and this site is full of ideas. The fact I have only made one pnuematic makes it hard for me to come up with ideas. I think a contest like this would be great in the fact it would also inspire people like me to build something new.

That's exactly what I was thinking. New and old (experienced) members, alike, can post and show the ideas. Who knows, one of the ideas may be the start of a new standard. Someone had to think of using a sprinkler valve in a pneumatic. That's what I'm aiming for.

This sounds like a brilliant idea, I am always coming up with new ideas that may or may not work, but I only ever seem to get prototypes that dont quite work properly built, and some of the designs I have never built at all.

Excellent idea. There are just tons of ideas out there that one day people say "nice job" and then the next day its forgotten. So many of these ideas should be taken further. Im with this all the way.

Yes, an idea dump-site may be nice, but I agree to Starman, that many people (including me) will want to keep their best ideas to themselves until they can show it off in use, being the first one to post such thing.

yeah, It bugs me how nobody really thinks of new things in this hobby.

The vortex cap design that I thought of should of been a no brainer but everyone including myself for a long time, didnt really think of anything new.

Everyone thought, Inline Vortex, has to have a block inside a chamber... Nobody really posted or thought... heck what if I made the chamber the block... I could also do magazines that way!

Another one of those kind of things is another one of my designs, the BDC for airsoft. Works great, easy to make a bunch of shells and is cheap.

So far in the past year or so that I have been a member I have contributed these new ideas:

A new Burst Disk Cartridge Designfor airsoft.
A new type of BBMG, the vortex cap.
Real magazine replica loading bbmg.
Burst Disk Mine
Burst Disk grenade
Bullpup Coaxial Inline
and more...

Most of my designs are really simple, and I can't believe I posted or thought of them first. Heck a vortex Cap bbmg is easier to make than an Inline.

Right now im working on a design that uses stock AK magazines from an airsoft rifle, a hopup with a co2 system to effectively get great performance in a simple portable solution for airsoft.

I personally try to create something new every single time I build something.

So I like the idea to have a contest on ideas

That's what I'm trying to draw out from people. I know it's there. I just can't see it, yet.

We've done the construction of a cannon in most of the contests, so why not this time just have it about performance.
Maybe have a league of BBMG's and see whos is the most powerful at a certain pressure or so. Or have a league for largebore guns..Say anything over 2" is classed as a large bore gun.
