pneumatic risks?

Lately i have been building a pneumatic cannon because i am constantly hearing that they are more powerfull, consistant and SAFER. i agree on the first two on some level but safer pvs pipes at cold temperatures become brittle and risk being shattered... thats a problem that doesent occur with combustions. Could someone advise me on this.

Its a fairly complex answer, although you should get the jist. The only thing safer about pneumatics is that usally most people that make them are "more" advanced in the hobby, therefore more aware of problems. Combustions have less pressure, and for a shorter duration. They also cant be overcharged. All guns are safe it buit, operated, and mainted correctly.

Well,pneumatics are safer in the sense that there is no fire.But as long as you have a pressure guage over charging wont be a major problem. Pneumatics are better in some way because you can launch water direcctly. Filling them can be a pain in the @$$. Combustions are more portable and you dont have to worry about sprinkler wiring and air valv's...etc

Thanks for the info but my question was related to the pvc becoming brittle in high pressures, because if so then that would be a very large risk. I wonder if this is possible in abs pipe.

No!!! Do NOT use ABS for a pneumatic...

Use SCH-40/80/120 PVC ASTM-1785 NSF-pw rated pipe.

Does any pipe get more brittle at higher pressure? seriously, pipe degreades when it gets too cold or too hot, don't shoot it when it when it's 150 out, or when it's 32 F out, like you want to outside then anyway....

Sch 40
1" pipe is rated 400 psi+
2" pipe is rated 280 psi+
3" pipe is rated 260 psi+
4" pipe is rated 200 psi+

So if your filling it to 100psi, even if the pipe is somewhat degraded from tempatures higher\lower than 73 degrees F you should be fine...

If your really scared use Sch 80 pipe, but it cost more and it's harder to find, your safe in my opinion, just don't abuse your gun, and it won't abuse you...

Actually, I love outdoors during the winter... a metal gun is in order before it gets here, but not right now...
