maybe BLB means by calibrated that the ratio is the most realistic, by testing pellet guns with previous performance data of a similar gun in proper balistics gel.

"is it the same conistency as human flesh?"

No.
Even the specilized ballistics gelletin (maybe especialy the specilized stuff?) is significantly less durable than the real deal. (or, rather, freshly euthanized pig leg; they don't do many tests using human tissues)

It thusly tends to give overly dramatic representations of the effect of temporary cavity - it will often fracture when real flesh wouldn't.

...and, yes, "calibrate": 1 steel bb at 590 fps should penetrate 9.5cm.

Surely, beyond the original gelatin, a extra "binder" (don't know what) could be added to help give the stuff a thicker and tougher effect.
It could be worth experimenting with.

The slow motion videos of ballistics gel on mythbusters look impressive, but as BLB said, it doesn't look "right". It still looks too fluid and fractures too much.

Or, of course, you could do some thing like the "water box o' truth".

Measure the distance that the projectile goes through water, and halve it for a good estimate.

...I'm sorry, but that made my year.

Just add some glues to it,not sure which type maybe the kind used in wood working PVA I believe.

If that does not work just experiment, until the right consitancy is found.

joannaardway-If i am correct(usualy not)a human body is made of 75% H20 so would you measure how the projectile went in the water by 3/4ths or 75% of the whole distance coverd??

RNA, let's formulate our own answear to that using a different example:
"can one estimate the penetration of a projectile into a box filled with of 25% steel plates and 75% water (by weight) by taking .75 times the distance said projectile would penetrate in water?

...that is, "no".

...but I've heard good things about the ballistic simulation of "wetpack". (or something like that)

...oh, and you guys might think http://www.brassfetcher.com is pretty neat.

Noob question.

Did you need to cook it or heat it? Or just mix cold water and gelatine?

I think its just gelatine. No heating or anything.
EDIT: oops sorry about that false information. There are different methods. Look here for a non-cooking method. http://www.tacticalshotgun.ca/content_n ... ation.html

Well, I took a pouch of gelatin... it showed the 1:9 ratio on it.. and it just said 1/4 cold water, 1/4 boiling water.. i didnt want to take the trouble to start the oven etc... so I did it in the microwave :P worked great... mixed everything and right now it's been 30 minutes, already solidifed.. i'll still give it 30 minutes to an hour.

Good. I hope it works well. I plan on making some soon.

It seems like the ratio is correct! I tried with my two minis (yes, I have two now!). Nothing actually went through that "jello". Just a few dents.

Tried with a few stuff.. peppercorn (of course didnt work) and even a small wood screw

A wood screw didn't go through? I would think throwing a wood screw would go through.

It's because my first batch was pretty hard... I did another batch for tomorrow morning, and I'm pretty sure this time the woodscrew will penetrate the gel.

Ok, I havn't posted here for ages but i couldn't help but not post.

On the Mythbusters, Carri, Grant and Tori used a "Balistics WAX" in an underwater shooting experiment.

I know we arn't talking about underwater shooting, but because cooking gelatine is alot less specialised than balistics gel is, making it a 1:40+ ratio might make a thick enough consistancy to make it more "realistic" if you know what I'm getting at.

The balistics wax looked realy hard and wasn't fully see-thru like the balistsics gel was, so maybe someone on these forums could give it a try and see how it goes?

The goal is not to have something like flesh.. just something to shoot at.
